Global Security Group supports strong legislation, policies and practices to strengthen government action.

27 June 2023

It’s time to elevate education and greater awareness of the laws of armed conflict to be able to represent the needs of communities affected by conflict – to those with the power to improve their circumstances.

This week in Canberra Dr Kay Danes OAM and Dr Glenn Kolomeitz provided a presentation to the Australian War Memorial staff on a range of legal topics, including how the Geneva Conventions and Additional Protocols I,II and III intersect with IHL/IHRL, JPELs, and Rules of Engagement in armed conflict.

From Afghanistan to the Russia – Ukraine international armed conflict (and other conflicts) we see unacceptable levels of suffering among the civilian population. But, together, we are using our voices to reaffirm the universality and relevance of IHL/IHRL in conversations to ensure the language of the law is respected and to pave the way for peace — to minimize the unnecessary suffering of civilians.

This is an important presentation for anyone seeking to understand our global responsibilities to maintaining peace through lawful conduct.

We can tailor this presentation to any organisation operating in Armed Conflict and other complex emergencies.

23 June 2023: Global Security Group became a co-signatory to a landmark justice advocacy submission to the International Criminal Court.

Why this case, why now?

Major General Paul Brereton, a judge and Australian Army reservist was tasked to investigate allegations of war crimes by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan. While Brereton's report, released in 2020, claimed to have found evidence that Australian troops unlawfully killed Afghans, incredibly, he gave a “blanket exemption” to the higher command.

Arguably, the Australian Government needs to address the "shocking lack of accountability at the top of our Defence Force" to end Australia's impunity on the issue of command responsibility.
